Episode 2: When Your Family Vacation Goes Viral (And Everyone Becomes a Parenting Expert)

This Week's Production Notes
Hey fellow chaos coordinators,
Remember when I said 10+ years of producing reality TV prepared me for anything? Well, apparently it didn't prepare me for the internet's reaction to our Hawaiian vacation highlight real.
One minute you're just documenting the beautiful disaster that is traveling with kids, the next minute Al Roker from The Today Show is saying, “I can relate to this Dad…” and then strangers on the internet are debating your parenting based on a 30-second montage of tropical tantrums.
Plot twist: Going viral is somehow more chaotic than the actual vacation. Well kind of! Let me explain.

Behind the Scenes: When Paradise Meets Meltdowns
So here's what happened, my wife and I had the idea to edit our family vacation like a reality show after being inspired by others online doing the same. And as a former reality TV Producer on shows like Bar Rescue, Carnie Wilson: Unstapled and recent Emmy winner Chasing Flavor with Carla Hall, I knew a thing or two about filming and editing for dramatic effect. But we also wanted to showcase that vacationing with kids is not always sunshine and rainbows and that is something we know firsthand and from our friends and family members. It’s hard and we wanted to show that in hopes for others to laugh and not feel so all alone.
The Setup: Picture-perfect Hawaiian backdrop. Family of four with matching leis and vacation vibes. What could go wrong?!
The Reality: Everything. Literally everything that could melt down, did melt down. And I caught most of it on camera because, well, we also had to attend to their needs and meltdowns are a part of traveling with toddlers.
The Plot Twist: The internet decided our vacation chaos was worth millions of views and apparently worthy of national media attention.
The Real Kicker: Now I'm fielding interview requests while my kids are still asking if we can go back to Hawaii "but without the crying parts."

The Comments Section: A Reality Show of Its Own
The not so beautiful thing about viral family content is that everyone suddenly becomes a parenting expert. Here's what the internet had to say about our tropical disaster:
The "This Is So Real" Brigade:
FINALLY someone showing what family vacations actually look like!
This is 10000000% accurate.
Thank you for keeping it real. This is exactly our last trip to Disney.
The dramatic music over normal kid stuff is chef's kiss
I felt this in my soul. Saving for when people ask why we don't travel with kids.
This is the true reality of having kids that they rarely show on social media 😂😂
This is too close to home. I feel like you edited in your family to our family vacation.
The Gentle Parenting Police:
You seem like gentle parents, why do your kids cry so much?
OMG why are those kids so bad?!
This seems like a lot of meltdowns for one trip...
I have three kids and we travel a lot with the, and we’ve never had any issues. Thank God they are good kids🥰
Vacation? More like nightmare! Glad my daughter never acted like this, starts with the parents.
The Vacation Shamers:
This is why we don't take kids on expensive trips
They're too young to appreciate Hawaii anyway
You should have left them with grandparents
The Comedy Gold:
The real MVP is grandpa
Absolutely perfect condom ad
Reality tv or scary movie trailer
Mom was over it before they got on the plane 😭😭
I would literally just get in my car, start driving and start a new life.
My Brand Connections:
Crocs: lmk when the season drops
Frollies: bring some Frollies next time for a quick break 😅
Goldfish: Smiling on through the chaos! That’s what family vacation’s really about. 🧡
Virgin Voyages: Sometimes the answer is simple: Adults only 😜
Media Circus: From Beach to Headlines
Today.com said ‘The Trip included “tantrums, triumphs, and tropical sunsets"…plus the slap ‘heard round the island’ and they wanted to know how it all went down.
People.com featured it as the “real experience” traveling with little ones.
The funny part? Trying to explain to journalists that there was no grand strategy here. It was just: kids melt down, parents survive, document everything, edit it like the dramatic disaster it actually was.
Quote they used: "Take the trip, make the memories, enjoy the happy moments because there are more happy moments than bad."
Quote they didn't use: "Also, we definitely need a vacation from this vacation, and possibly more therapy."

Content Creator's Corner: Lessons from Vacation Viral Fame
Lesson #1: Authenticity Beats Perfection Every Time
We could have posted the perfect family beach photos. Instead, we posted the reality of traveling with small humans who have big feelings about everything from airplane snacks to pool toys. And, guess which one resonated with more people?
Lesson #2: The Power of Expectation vs. Reality
The split between vacation Instagram posts and vacation reality is comedy gold. Everyone relates to spending thousands of dollars to watch their kids cry in a prettier location.
Lesson #3: Editing Is Everything
Taking mundane family chaos and giving it the reality TV treatment transforms relatable moments into shareable content. The dramatic music over a toddler banging their lip? Chef's kiss
Lesson #4: People Want Permission to Be Real
The comments show parents are desperate for someone to say "your vacation can be a disaster and that's okay." Sometimes being the first to admit chaos gives others permission to do the same. This also helps parents feel not so alone, cause sometimes parenting small humans feels isolating and like we are the only ones experience this disaster. However, this is the furthest from the truth and again the comment section can attest to this truth.
This Week's Dad Hack
The Vacation Survival Kit (Media-Approved Edition):
Lower your expectations by 50%, then lower them again
Pack twice as many snacks as you think you need
Embrace the chaos - it makes better stories anyway
Dr. Becky watched our video and commented and her points ring true, one thing we can do with littles on vacation is be patient and over explain the plan for the day, so there are no surprises. Change can be tough for big emotion kids, so letting them be a part of the change is beneficial to everyone on the trip.
Remember: You're not failing, you're just parenting in a different zip code
Bonus hack: When people ask "How was your vacation?" just show them the video. It's more efficient than explaining.

VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED: Contains realistic portrayals of family travel. May cause uncontrollable nodding and "that's so us" comments.
Keep creating (and surviving family trips),
