A Parenting Newsletter from a Former TV Producer Turned Dad Content Creator

This Week’s Production Notes

Welcome my fellow chaos wranglers,

To the 1st edition of Turning Chaos into Content a deeper look into my world and how you can take advantage of the growing opportunities in social using what you have. And for me what I have is two wonderfully amazing kids and a long history of producing TV.

As someone who spent years in television production dealing with talent, impossible deadlines, and equipment failures, I thought I was prepared for anything. Then I became a dad. Turns out, no amount of TV drama can prepare you for the raw, unfiltered performance art that is a toddler meltdown.

Behind the Scenes: When Life Gives You Screaming

A recent viral moment came courtesy of my little co-star having what I like to call a "full production breakdown" over... wait for it... a banana. Not just any banana situation, mind you, but the classic "I want the banana but I also don't want the banana but I definitely want the banana" scenario that every parent knows intimately.

The Setup: Picture this - I'm in the kitchen, my daughter is delivering an Oscar-worthy performance that could be heard three houses down, and I'm doing what any seasoned producer does: I keep rolling.

The Twist: While neighbors probably thought we were running some kind of medieval torture chamber, the reality was beautifully mundane. There I was, “calmly” slicing a banana, and then attempting to put it back together. Episode 2 hasn’t dropped, but you can imagine, it did NOT work. That is parenting!

Content Creator's Corner: Finding Gold in the Chaos

Lesson #1: The External vs. Internal Perspective
In TV, we call this "dramatic irony" - when the audience knows something the characters don't. In parenting content, it's the gap between what chaos sounds like from the outside versus what parents are feeling on the inside.

Lesson #2: Authenticity Beats Production Value
No fancy lighting, no scripted dialogue, no background music - just raw, real parenting in action. Sometimes the best content is just showing up with your phone and documenting the beautiful absurdity of daily life. And although we may not capture the moment in real time, we can recreate the moments because there is no shortage of parent/toddler content.

Lesson #3: The Power of the Reveal
The magic happens in that moment when you flip the script. Set up the drama, then reveal the wonderfully ordinary truth. It's storytelling 101, but it works every time because it's relatable.

The Producer's Take: Why This Content Works

From a content creation standpoint, this video hits all the marks:

  • Hook: Immediate audio or visual that grabs attention within the first 3 seconds.

  • Conflict: The setup creates tension and concern

  • Resolution: The reveal provides relief and humor

  • Relatability: Every parent has been there

The beauty is in the simplicity. No elaborate setup, no expensive equipment - just a parent doing parent things while chaos unfolds around them. In today’s social algorithm, it’s about creating content that is shareable. In order for a viewer to share your content with a friend or family member, it has to be relatable. This video hits the relatability spot on!

Our viral video to Hawaii went viral and how we filmed, edited and how this moment took off.

Final Frame

Remember, fellow content creators and chaos managers: every meltdown is potential material, every mundane moment has story potential, and sometimes the best production choice is just to keep the camera rolling and stay calm.

The screaming will stop eventually. The content lives forever.

Keep creating,
