Episode 3: December in Parenting - A Survival Guide to Holiday Chaos
This Week's Production Notes
Hey fellow chaos coordinators,
December is almost over, but also feels like it hasn’t started until Christmas arrives. This is the so-called most wonderful time of the year... if by "wonderful" you mean "a month-long endurance test disguised as holiday magic."
I've been documenting our December journey, and let me tell you - it's like producing a reality show where everyone's having a breakdown simultaneously, the budget keeps increasing, and the finale involves two weeks of children being home 24/7 starting today!
Welcome to December in Parenting, where every day is color-coded chaos and survival is the only victory that matters.
Behind the Scenes: The December Production Schedule
So I created this little calendar to map out a humorous look at December for parents, and honestly, it reads like a disaster movie script with a holiday soundtrack.
This month makes reality TV look calm and organized.

The December Parenting Calendar: A Day-by-Day Breakdown
Let me walk you through this beautiful disaster:
Early December (The False Hope Phase):
Day 1: "We're going to be so organized this year!"
Day 2-3: School emails with 47 details you missed the first time
Day 4: The ONLY day marked for "Time for yourself" (treasure it) DID everyone get that day? I did not this year.
Day 5-7: More school emails because apparently you missed details in the details
Mid-December (The Panic Sets In):
Random days of "Threaten Santa is not coming if you don't behave" almost every day, right?
"Class volunteer you forgot you signed up for" but it’s always fun being with your kids in their class.
"Buy tree, decorate tree, house and everything else" (because apparently one day covers all of this) But we know it extends for at least a week before it’s all done.
"Kids sick but you still have things to do" (Murphy's Law in action)
Late December (The Final Countdown):
"Last minute teacher gifts/random panic shopping"
"Holiday parties, cookie exchanges, random dress up days"
And then... the grand finale...
December 21-31: THE RED ZONE
Eleven straight days of "Kids OFF FOR 2 WEEKS!!!!!!" And we have to get presents wrapped and keep them entertained and fed and oh don’t forget vacation, packing and seeing the rest of your family.
The exclamation points aren't for excitement. They're for survival.
Parents in the Trenches
The response to this calendar has been... therapeutic for everyone involved:
The Recognition Brigade:
"This is the most accurate thing I've ever seen! Printing this for my fridge!"

The Producer's Take: December as a Reality Show
If December parenting were a reality TV show, here's how I'd pitch it:
"December Survival: Holiday Edition"
A month-long competition where parents attempt to create magical holiday memories while managing school events, sick children, and their own sanity. Contestants must navigate class parties, teacher gifts, and family gatherings while maintaining the illusion that they have everything under control.
Episode Highlights:
The Great Cookie Exchange Panic of Week 2
"Dress Up Day Disaster" (when you find out at 7 AM)
"The Santa Threat Escalation" (how many times is too many?)
"Two Weeks at Home: A Survival Story"
Elimination Challenge: Make it through December without having a complete breakdown in the Target holiday section.
Winner: Anyone who survives with their sense of humor intact.
This Month's Dad Hack Spotlight
The December Survival Kit:
1. Keep it short
Keeping this newsletter short on purpose, because this is just a distraction from the many other things we need and should be doing this time of year.
They say we really only have about 10-12 Christmas’ with our kids as little kids, so as hard as it feels sometimes, they will only be this young once.
See You in the New Year
Let’s just get through this month, shall we. Day by day! Excited for what we are building and going to be sharing with you in the new year!
Keep surviving (and documenting),
Devin
